Volunteer: Snow Angel

Many older adults and those with disabilities aren't physically able to shovel snow or have someone they can ask for help. They run the risk of in-the-city fines if it isn’t done, not to mention the safety hazard.

How can you help? Consider becoming a Snow Angel! Volunteer Snow Angels adopt an older person’s sidewalk and driveway for the winter. You wouldn’t have to be able to shovel every single time it snows. If you are out of town, sick, injured, etc. staff will find a substitute. If you’d just like to be a substitute Snow Angel, that would also be very appreciated! Volunteer groups and children are welcome for this flexible opportunity.

Volunteer: Meals on Wheels Driver

Volunteer to profoundly change lives by delivering nutritious meals to older adults who are homebound! Each Meals on Wheels driver picks up meals and takes them to about 20 people on their chosen route in Missoula County. These clients can't get out to buy food, and some aren't physically able to prepare it, so having meals brought to them is essential. Most of them are socially isolated and their Meals on Wheels driver may be the only person they see each week. Having a weekly connection with an older adult in need makes this volunteer opportunity very rewarding!

Volunteers can choose one weekday per week to deliver meals, or they can be substitute drivers. Subs can decide if they want to take a shift that the regular driver can't do. These volunteer positions require a 6-month commitment. Meals are picked up around 10 am, Monday-Friday, at the Providence Center and usually take about 3 hours to deliver. Drivers can bring children or a friend along to help. An organization can choose to take on an "adopt-a-route" in which team members can rotate who is delivering the meals each week. Mileage reimbursement is available for drivers.

Volunteer: Heart Lake Ambassador

Help protect Heart Lake and its charismatic goat herd!

The Heart Lake area in the Great Burn Proposed Wilderness is not only beautiful, but is easily accessible, making it a perfect destination for families or beginner hikers and backpackers. The Heart Lake area is also home to a native Mountain Goat herd. Goats are naturally curious and love salt, so they become habituated to humans when they are allowed to lick sweaty backpacks or eat human food. Over time, this behavior can create dangerous situations for the goats, pets, and humans. Recently, the Heart Lake goats have been getting a little too close to visitors in camp. Injuries or accidents between goats and humans can lead to trails being shut down or the removal of goats, and we want to avoid both of these!

Ambassadors will serve as a friendly, informative presence in the Heart, Pearl, and Dalton Lake area. Because this area has so many new to the area and new to camping visitors, ambassadors will provide useful information about wildlife (especially goats), camping at Heart Lake, trail access, safety and leave no trace practices to visitors in the area. Our goal is to have an ambassador at the lake every weekend in July and August. Staying at least one night is preferred, but please help out however long you can. Ambassadors will receive a free Great Burn shirt, hat, and water bottle!

 Level of Independence and Expectations:

Within the parameters of MIC/YWCA policies and procedures, volunteers exercise a moderate level of independence in decision-making. Significant errors in judgment may endanger the health and safety of the clients and/or staff/volunteers and may cause serious financial and/or legal repercussions for the MIC/YWCA. If volunteers are unable to meet the expectations of the MIC/YWCA, the volunteer time of service may be terminated.

Special Note: Walk-ins at the Family Housing Center is open to the general public and while all walk-ins can be supported with referrals and provision of resources or information, not all walk-ins qualify for YWCA and MIC services at the Family Housing Center. Volunteers will be trained to understand and assess eligibility criteria.

Volunteer: Volunteer with MCCHD Vaccine Outreach

The Health Department is recruiting volunteers to assist with the communications team’s outreach program. Due to the high level of vaccine hesitancy in Missoula County, we are building a program to equip Missoulians to talk to family, friends, and neighbors about the COVID-19 vaccines.

This work is incredibly important to our community-wide goal of herd immunity. The demand for vaccine appointments have slowed down since April 1st, but there are still many Missoulians who have not been vaccinated. This means that there are likely people within your network that have not been vaccinated.

We need vaccine advocates to counter misinformation with resources, media literacy, and vaccine clinic information. This can entail tabling, safely canvassing your neighborhood, social media outreach, or spreading information within an organization you are involved with.

Please complete this brief form so that the communications team can reach out to you with more information.

Any questions can be directed to Lydia Dal Nogare at ldalnogare@missoulacounty.us.
