Every year, the Jeannette Rankin Peace Center creates a peace sign using luminaries in Caras Park as part of the downtown First Night festivities. A luminary is a brown paper bag, the sides of which have sketches, words and/or cut-outs with messages of peace for the new year, anchored with sand and holding a lit candle that makes the bag glow. Volunteers are needed to watch over the peace sign, add new candles as needed, and invite passers-by and First Night celebrants to make their own luminaries to add to the peace sign. JRPC provides the materials for the luminaries. Volunteers work in 2-hour shifts from 4:00 pm to midnight. This is a wonderful way to usher in the New Year in sharing wishes for peace!
